while supporting these same artisans through technical and

partners to ensure our efforts are coordinated with other

that supports small and medium enterprises primarily through
business management training.

PUEBLOS DEL SUR - PAST AND PRESENT
In 1991 a group of professionals and young artisans created
PUEBLOS DEL SUR with the purpose of making a solid contribution
to the dignity of handicraft work by searching for channels
of sales of its products. By partnering with Chilean and international
organizations.
Since the early days, PUEBLOS DEL SUR has grown to provide
providing export, marketing, technical training and design
assistance to more than 250 artisans, exporting products to
nearly 10 countries. PUEBLOS DEL SUR continues to broaden
its reach to include additional artisans and workshops, while
expanding to new markets overseas.
PUEBLOS DEL SUR is proud to operate as a self-financed and
stable non-profit organization. Key to our success has been
the operational efficiency that allows us to maintain low
overhead and operating costs, while ensuring high quality
products and services are delivered to each client. Since
our founding, we have undoubtedly made an important contribution
to both the artisans, our beneficiaries, and to promoting
the concept of Fair Trade in Chile and in the global marketplace.
FUTURE
Always looking ahead to the potential the future holds, PUEBLOS
DEL SUR hopes to expand its services to producers in a way
that is both efficient and effective in creating new employment
opportunities and high-quality handicraft exports. We see
the immense power of trade and the businesses engaged in it
to promote ethical operating principles that develop our human
resources while enhancing the quality of all of our lives
through increased availability of products and services worldwide.
As consumers become increasingly conscious of the sources
of the products they buy and the conditions under which they
were produced, PUEBLOS DEL SUR plans to continue to build
on this process of educating buyers to the fact that their
purchase can make a difference. We see a vital link strengthening
between our artisans, their stories and skills, and the individuals
who buy and appreciate their work. Finally, we wish to remain
loyal to our principles of Fair Trade and its power to create
a better world, while fulfilling our role as part of the global
network of producers, exporters, importers, wholesalers, brokers
and retailers who can make this vision a reality.

PUEBLOS
DEL SUR mission is to improve the lives of economically struggling
workshops and artisan groups throughout Chile by promoting
and exporting the handicrafts they design and create, as well
as working with the artists to improve their business practices
and continually develop new products that stay true to their
traditions.
Promotion and Export
In Chile today, individual artists and small workshops face
significant challenges in finding international markets and
exporting their products, on top of the difficulties of promoting
and distributing their work domestically. We act as a proactive
link between these diverse artist groups, and the distinct
international markets where we work through various distribution
channels to access the consumers who will purchase and appreciate
these unique products. A key aspect of our continuing success
in this role is our commitment to Total Client Service. Our
understands that our customers have demanding clients, and
success requires total commitment from every party along the
supply chain. We are also proud of the outstanding reputation
we hold within the Chilean artisan and business community,
based on the quality of the services we provide and our long
tradition of fair trade. The prices we pay our artisans are
determined by the artisans. By purchasing from Pueblos del
Sur importers, distributors and retailers bring high-quality,
unique and attractive items to local markets, while at the
same time improving the living conditions of our producers
by paying fair prices and stimulating justice in the workplace
of the developing world.
Product Development
Pueblos del Sur Design Center seeks to satisfy the increasing
demands of our international clients by providing interactive
design opportunities via special orders for new products or
requests to modify existing ones. This allows our customers,
who are closest to the needs and preferences of their diverse
markets, to collaborate with our artists, creating better
markets for their work. Our periodic Product Development Workshops
are in-depth projects during which Pueblos del Sur pairs a
professional designer with select artists over a period of
time to create a new product line or explore improvements
to existing products. These product development processes
will always happen in harmony with the producers' product
capabilities, work traditions, and the artisans' desire to
innovate and express their creativity. Pueblos del Sur adds
value to this process by integrating the needs of our client
with the skills and energy of our beneficiaries, the artists,
so that both parties derive maximum benefit from the partnership.
By integrating these four key activities - promotion, export,
technical assistance and product development - Pueblos del
Sur improves the living conditions of Chilean artisans, while
the world enjoys the craftsmanship of their products.

Our Producers and products |
 |
The beneficiaries
of PUEBLOS DEL SUR work are, in general, micro-enterprises
and associations of artisans who are from poor economic sectors.
Moreover, despite their ability to produce attractive products
and generate fair labor, their relatively small production
capacity and minimal use of technology have limited them in
some way.
Specifically,
the typical characteristics of PUEBLOS DEL SUR artisans can
be summarized as follows:
· They have high technical and manual capacities. The
products they create reflect their dexterity and their desire
to produce high-quality and wonderfully finished products.
· In normal circumstances, they find themselves working
at less than full capacity. Most could handle increased demand
for their products and, in fact, some find other part-time
work to augment their family income as a result.
· They often work in association with other artisans,
workshops and organizations in order to produce a specific
line of similar products.
· They typically do not have the scale, resources or
managerial capacity to access international markets as individuals
or single workshops, therefore they promote their products
through PUEBLOS DEL SUR.
· They are interested in constantly improving their
production processes and management skills, which leads them
to be actively involved in technical assistance and managerial
support programs, among other types of training activities.

Fair Trade |
 |
PUEBLOS
DEL SUR is a trading company dedicated to fair trade, sometimes
known as "alternative trade." Alternative trading
organizations (ATOs) like ours are created to benefit small
producers who are economically underprivileged, often in the
developing world. In contrast to the companies that market
developing world handicrafts by paying the economically struggling
artisans unfair prices for their goods, we find viable markets
for their high-quality handcrafted goods that pay fair prices.
This provides the workers in our artisan shops with an alternative
to exploited labor, allowing them to obtain or maintain a
decent standard of living. Secondarily, we attempt to promote
the concept of fair trade by creating marketing initiatives
that stimulate the knowledge about traditional products and
cultural values in the third world while also educating the
buyers to the challenges faced by our producers.
In
Chile, PUEBLOS DEL SUR leads the export and marketing functions
for our small artisan workshops while respecting their business
and social needs. For example, we often provide partial prepayments
to finance raw materials for large orders, enabling them to
compete in international markets. We also commit to payment
delivered promptly after the production is finished. In addition,
we provide guidance as to how to best incorporate technology
and increase production efficiency into the workshop operations,
as well as link our artisans to other training organizations
to gain additional technical assistance on a programmatic
basis.
Also
in keeping with the principles of Fair Trade, we work closely
with our clients and partner organizations to gather valuable
market information that assists our producers in designing
and offering appropriate products for the various markets
to which we export. This two-way flow of information is critical
to the continuing success of the Fair Trade movement and successful
long-term business partnerships worldwide.
Pueblos
del Sur this in process of being part of the IFAT, the International
Federation of Alternative Trade, a coalition of the handicrafts
and agricultural producer organizations and ATOs (both importers
and exporters) around the world. We adhere to IFAT´s
standards of fair trade and to its objectives.
